Chapter History

Longwood University's chapter of Sigma Sigma Sigma is the Alpha chapter. We are the first chapter of Sigma Sigma Sigma, and sisters enjoy walking in the footsteps of their founders each and every day. At The State Female Normal School, now Longwood University, in Farmville, Virginia, eight women formed a special bond while studying for their future teaching careers. In 1897, Lelia Scott and Lucy Wright led the first meetings of the secret society, the S.S.S. Club. On April 20, 1898, these women officially announced the founding of the Greek letter society known as ΣΣΣ. Sigma Sigma Sigma is one of the four sororities that were founded on the campus of Longwood University. The four sororities (in order of founding) are Kappa Delta, Sigma Sigma Sigma, Zeta Tau Alpha, and Alpha Sigma Alpha.
